Scrub Jay Press has four printing presses. Two of the presses are
antique platen presses, using hand set type, and two are offset presses
capable of printing from computer set type. The Press has a collection
of many fonts of lead type, and these fonts are complemented by a full
range of computer fonts. The Press has the ancillary equipment, paper
cutters, cameras, etc., to publish its books in shop. Books published by the press are printed in shop and usually hand-bound in shop.
Books of poetry published by the Press have been composed with hand
set Bodoni type, printed by hand on a 19th century Chandler Price platen
press, and bound by hand. This method of production is a traditional
letterpress process and results in fine volumes of intrinsic beauty and
enduring quality.
Because the process of setting type by hand and printing by hand is
time consuming and laborious, the Press also has two offset presses
which are employed to print longer works of fiction and non-fiction and
can be used to print books of photographs, drawings, or music.
